Any half decent stunt ring strategies?
|
|

The third mares of each dreams all apear to involve the stunt ring and
you can get something like 15 000 per ring if you are good at it.
Unfortunately my strategy of "mash the buttons alot and crash into
loads of stuff" doesnt really seem very consistent. any better ideas?

Playing through Frozen Bell (GOD DARNIT, JACKLE STOLE ANOTHER 630k RUN
FROM ME! ;-;), I believe I've figured out the way to go about stunt
rings. I've done it twice, and I took a picture of it...if only I could
find a USB cable and post the picture...and then I could post proofs of
my FB scores....except Mare 1, because Jackle actually killed me when I
got that score...anyway!
The key seems to be gaining a 10-stunt series and then ending it with
an air brake. The 10-stunt series nets you 1000 points: with the Ideya,
it's 2000. Ending it with an air brake apparantly doubles it to 2k: 4k
with the stunt ring. The game also says "Dreamy" above it (haha). Which
leads me to a quick question....does it mean anything if the game says
"Do not mind" after you complete a Mare?

Yeah. It seems like you have to air brake after the trick you're
currently performing is finished... and is it a 12-stunt series? That's
a bit strange. I know I airbrake after getting 10 stunts because I'm
nearly out of time...ah well, more research is in order, then.

I'm fairly certain that "Dreamy!" signifies you did the max amount of stunts as tabitha said, though if I remember rightly only 11 stunts are needed for that. And yeah, "Do not mind!" definitely means "You didn't do a single stunt! You really, really should mind!". :)
To the best of my knowledge, the full scoring system for stunt ribbons goes like this:
1st stunt: 100 points
2nd stunt: 200 points
3rd stunt: 300 points
4th stunt: 400 points
5th stunt: 500 points
6th stunt: 600 points
7th stunt: 700 points
8th stunt: 800 points
9th stunt: 900 points
10th stunt: 1,000 points
11th stunt: 2,000 points
...with the scores for multiple stunts being cumulative (so overall, 3 stunts = 1st stunt score + 2nd stunt score + 3rd stunt score), and the score for each stunt being multiplied by 2 if you're in bonus time. The overall score for 11 stunts / a "dreamy" is therefore 7,500, or a big fat 15,000 if you're in bonus time.
So it sounds to me like you're achieving 11 stunts "normally", Kraken, and that the air brake is counting as your final stunt. I'd never actually checked to see if the air brake counts myself, because I've always just avoided doing them (as they cut off your stunt session prematurely), but if the air brake does in fact count it might be good practice to always end a stunt session with one, as I think they can be performed instantly, even when you're in the middle of another stunt...
On a slightly unrelated note, I had a quick look on the game disc just now and found where the full list of stunt names is stored:
SMALL LOOP
MIDDLE LOOP
LARGE LOOP
GIANT LOOP!
8 CROSS
CLOVER LEAF!
TWISTER
MIXER
SWING
PARASOL
DANCE
MOON
ROULETTE R
ROULETTE L
CROSS
ARROW
L-WING
ROCK'N ROLL
SCREW
BASKET
TRIANGLE
TORNADO
BALLET
BOOMERANG
V-FALL
T-FALL
SPIN
AX R
AX L
SLING
TYPHOON
DRILL
SONIC
WIND
SPACE
SCORPION
... I didn't even know some of those existed ("clover leaf"? I can guess how it might be done, though). I know it wouldn't be particularly useful, but has anyone ever sat down and worked out how they're all done? Also, the list of "how many stunts you did" messages comes straight after them:
- DO NOT MIND! -
- NICE ONE -
- NICE TWO -
- NICE THREE -
- WONDERFUL FOUR -
- WONDERFUL FIVE! -
- FANTASTIC SIX!! -
- EXCELLENT SEVEN!! -
- COOL EIGHT!! -
- MARVELOUS NINE!! -
- SUPERB TEN!! -
- DREAMY !!! -
EDIT: Sorry those lists look so spaced out BTW, the forum seems to always interpret new lines as new paragraphs. :/

Yeah, sorry it is 11 not 12, my brain wasnt switched on. There is a
list in one of my guide books of all the stunt ring things I will copy
it out at some point. its VERY touchy though which is part of the
reason it took me so freaking long to get that glitch to work.
Point, I THINK the air break trick only works if you stop while
pressing a direction on the stick as there are three types of stunts, L
trigger, R Trigger and L + R Trigger. This seems fairly wierd to me.
HANG ON A SECOND!
I litterally though of this while typing. I cant remember if you can
move with L and R pushed down or not of the top of my head but if you
could (perhaps while dashing?) you could do a few stunts with L and R
then switch to L then R which would give you even more chance at
getting those juicy dreamys.
I will check this out when I get home.

I've recently noticed, while doing SC3, that you may get 2000pts for EACH stunt beyond 10, not just the 11th stunt. Be best get a video capture of a dreamy to check this, I can't really confirm this without. I've certainly got dreames without an air brake at the end, and that might explain why the stunt number only goes up to 10 - like links, once you reach a certain number of stunts, the points for each one max out.
The only way to confirm this would be to video capture a 12+ stunt ribbon and count the '2000' point symbols that pop up around Nights. Or maybe pausing the game as you pick up the stunt ribbon and noting your score and again when you finish...
They are such an important scoring technique, its a shame we dont have a consistent method for it.

I've got a question as to how you all handle Stunt Rings. It would seem that abusing the wall glitch to quickly pull off stunts is vital. However, eventually one will not be able to do any more tricks into a wall (ex. the floor) because one can't repeat the same trick twice in on Stunt mode. So, do you all simply dash for a wall of a different orientation?
For example, in Mystic Forest's temple, I will usually do a trick or two while opening the Link Ball. Afterwards, I head to the floor and start mashing my trick buttons. But, after 3-4 tricks, my progress slows because I can't use anymore tricks in the bottom region of the analog. So, should I dash to the ceiling to squeeze in some different kinds of tricks?
Also, as far as the actual glitching technique goes, I just hold the joystick in the general direction of the wall. Then, I wiggle it around a bit while pressing L or R. Does this sound about right?

I've just changed direction along the same ceiling/floor, so I dont
waste time moving around. I've always thought that it would be best to
find a 'proper' strategy for stunts though - without using the wall
glitch. It would help in Xmas night.

Oh, I agree by a long shot. If it were up to me, I wouldn't employ the wall glitch. However, when it comes to breaking records such as some of the Japanese high scores, it seems that this accepted method is the only way to keep up with the competition.
Anyway, my issue is that if I use the same wall (ie. the floor), I limit myself to the amount of tricks I can do. I can't do the tricks in the top two quadrants of the analog stick because most of them shoot me away from the floor. Suggestions?

I have officially nothing to contribute thus far. Im not a fan of the whole stunt ring aspect of the game and find it horribly random. I still keep hoping for inspiration though.

Proof of a 12 Stunt Dreamy
|
|
|
|
|

...if anyones interested, above is a clear pic of two '2000 x 2' icons, while below are 3 shots from a different run of a stunt ribbon, starting at 26690 before the ribbon starts and ending with 45810, which meant that the dreamy gave me 19k in bonus time, which proves the 12 stunt theory (15k for the standard 11 stunt Dreamy, and another 4k for the 12th) - the spare 120pts must of come from the rings before the stunt ring. I suppose it doesnt prove that you could get more than 12 (a 13 stunt dreamy would give you 23k for 9 secs of work!!!), but I assume that it would.

I wonder if the 12+ stunt ribbon is a glitch similar to the stunt wall glitch - and whether it was taken out of XN as well (though that would be hard to prove, as dreamies as more difficult because of that). I think that this adds more weight to stunt driven stategies in mares that have them (I'm thinking especially of FB2), and might explain further the JNP scores, if someone exploited this consistently.

That is quite the discovery! it didnt even occur to me although to be honest I find the stun ring specific levels the most irritating in the game. But yeah I think there is massive potential for score increases here although im not sure the JP scores are totally dependant on them. I mean we are pretty close to SV already and getting closer fo FB every week. Also I think we could take down SG as soon and we get around to it. I think that this could push the scores up for every dream (bar Soft Museum) by 16/20 000!
How hard is it to pull off? and thanks for sharing.

I have started messing around with the stunt ribbon for practice, on Spring Valley. I tried to get Dreamies, then when I could do those consistenly, tried for double Dreamies. I have got it up to Quadruple Dreamies. Anyone have any idea how high it can go? Lui have you gotten it higher? I tried to take a pic but it was no good - I only got 2 score symbols at a time on the screen, but was able to clearly count the stunts... 11, 12, 13, 14. And each time, a new 2000 x 2 symbol appeared.
This is cool! And it has major implications.
