New strat for Stick Canyon 1

Using the current best strategy for Stick Canyon Course 1, you're only able to collect the link ball on every other lap, because (as was discovered a while back), it only seems to respawn on every other lap, assuming you open it each time it appears. I think the video currently up on the site shows this effect:

http://www.scoreattack.net/dreamvideo.html

However, what I've just today realised is why the link ball doesn't respawn on every lap - it isn't, as I previously assumed, because it's a special kind of link ball. In fact it seems to be just like every other link ball in the game.

Now it's pretty well established that all of the items in a course are respawned when you fly over the Ideya Palace after completing a full lap. It seems that the reason the link ball doesn't always respawn in Stick Canyon 1 is because, when you collect it, you'll still be "carrying" it when you fly over the Ideya Palace to begin another lap. Apparently, when you go past the palace and the game decides which items to respawn, it doesn't respawn the link ball if it's still in your posession.

But if you're performing the "infinite link" on Stick Canyon 1, you'll necessarily be flying very fast and you'll always pass over the palace with the ball by your side. Even if you've successfully opened it before you fly over the palace, it lingers by your side for several seconds before it disappears, so the problem is fairly hard to avoid.

Unless of course you just fly the course backwards, which is the new strategy I'm using. Doing this ensures that you'll always open the link ball in the middle of the course, which means that it'll always respawn on every lap, which means that you can get more points overall. Currently I've managed a score of exactly 105,000 with this approach (EDIT: now 107,490), and I think 110,000 should be possible with a perfect run, compared to my own and tabitha's previous best scores of 103,000ish.

So, anyone else going to have a bash at mastering this method? It's quite tricky...

It's been a long time since anyone's replied to this thread, but just wanted to say thanks to Lance for writing this up. Perfecting your strategy I've now been able to get a score of 117,490 with a link of 403, and it was absolutely necessary in achieving the JP total score. Here's a video for anyone that wants to see it in action: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=XUmUtnSWFBM

When you guys do reverse infinite laps do your hands get all cramped up and sore?? For me it's so unnatural to go left that I have to grip the controller as hard as I possibly can. After playing for a couple of hours I had indentations in my fingers from gripping it so hard!!! LOL...not good! Anyway, this reverse infinite link was really hard to get used to, mostly getting the link ball each time without losing the link, but I do enjoy it now, especially the part at the beginning where you keep the link going from lap 1 to lap 2 by bouncing off the ceiling! Watch for it in the video if you didn't know about it.
