Little hint for an extra lap on SG4
Reply Quote
It is acctually possible to squeeze and extra lap out of SG4 although the timing is VERY tight.

From the ideya palace make all possible speed toward the idea palace making sure you collect 4 chips on the way, you can do this easily by dashing throught the little star formation on the left of the bubble then through the bubble itself. You dont want to waste any time paralooping here. now out the other side of the bubble and over or under the Ideya capture but DONT enter it. Into the twater, try to miss all the rings on your way past, hit the dash balls and they will push you down through the current where there are two chip cages.

Break the two cages now fight up through the current, back up past the rings (again try not to hit any) back out of the water the way you came in and into the Ideya capture. Anything over 92 or 93 seconds here remaining is a bonus. now you have to make all possibly speed to finish the lap, then get in a couple more (I forget if it is 2 or 3 off the top of my head) in. You will be able to finish the final lap but with only a second or two to spare providing you dont make any mistakes, its a bit risk, but its worth it!

Cool, that's really helpful.

I'd completely forgotten about the cages as well.

Interesting, I actually wasn't doing that when I got my highest score for the course (56,000), though I'm not sure if I wasn't doing it because I didn't think it was possible, or because I'd worked out that the alternative yielded better results. For what it's worth, the "alternative" approach that I used was:

- Don't free the Ideya (or break the chip cages) on the first lap.

- On the second lap, free the Ideya. (You should always have 20 blue chips by this stage.)

- On either the second, third or fourth laps, duck down and break the two chip cages when you enter the underwater bit (you'll get a nice amount of points for them as you'll be in bonus time).

- Do a full four laps.

Of course that means that I was in less of a frantic rush to fit in the full four laps, which might have meant that I benefited because I had time to collect items more carefully. Also, I think the large link score from breaking the two chip cages in bonus time might have counteracted the bonus points I "lost" by freeing the Ideya on the second lap instead of the first, but I'm not certain.

Hmm, I'll have to compare the two methods at some point, see which one milks the most points...

Now thats a good idea, can you continue the link from entrance of the water down to the chip cages? And if not do you break the cages before the link ball? This is indeed very interesting.

Not sure about the links, but I was definitely breaking the cages after successfully opening the link-ball. You have to open the ball relatively "quickly" though, otherwise you'll have gone too far past the cages to be able to comfortably backtrack for them, so what I was doing was breaking the cages on whatever lap I *did* manage to open the link-ball swiftly.

Yeah I did a little playing with this last night, I think the factor in how "fast" you break the link ball is if you collect the both pairs of stars or not just after the rings or not, if you get them both you can get the link ball without going to far past the cages. However, its worth noting there is a fair amount of leeway here as you get three laps to do this ergo three attempts at getting all 4 stars.

When i got my highest SG4 score i linked the cage before getting the crystal. It got me a pretty good link of 25 and that is how i would usually do it.
