Any tips for breaking 600k?
Reply Quote
The most I can seem to get is 400k (just below, anyway)...I cant get that infinite loop in Mare 1 down, and I have trouble with mares 2 and 3 as well. Any advice?

Well :Lance is the man to talk to on MF1 particularly mare 3 which he got something stupid like 107 000 on. the infinite on mare 1 is damn tricky. I will try to put up a little video of it tonight even if I cant get a pefect run I will put a few loops up in the research section.

Mare 2

there are enough chips on the way to the Ideya capture to break it on the fist run, there are three just past the start a little high up, theres another 5 under the sign, 7 above the top right or the sign. Above the top let of the palace is a link ball which you should be able to get going through the yellow double rings before the dash ball. DONT hit the dash ball, if you juuuust   go under it at a 17 or 18 minutes past angle you can collect a further 2 chips and link past the bouncy trees to the palace for a 23 link.

Mare 3

Dash left at the start break the chip box and dash back to the left collecting all the chips on the way, this will leave you 1 chips short on the way to the palace. Just under the dash ball near the ceiling is a yellow white and blue sign with an arrow pointing upwards, paraloop behind it and you can snatch a few chips out of the fore ground. then on through the swtiches and down into the little secret cave which I think you know about.

Im sure lance will be able to give more help.

Hmm, the best thing for me to do would probably be to just describe what I do on Mystic Forest, so I'll run through my overall level strat. Incidentally, these descriptions will probably make far more sense if you read them while playing the game, so if you're not lazy enough to have your Saturn set up next to your PC you might want to print this out or something. :)

Also, parts of this almost certainly re-hash what tabitha said above, but for the whole thing to make sense it seemed best to do a full explanation. OK:

Course 1 (my best: 107,520)

First you'll want to collect 13 chips as Claris, probably with the method I described in this thread:

http://www.scoreattack.net/scoreattackforum/forums/165/ShowPost.aspx

This'll let you destroy the Ideya Capture on your first lap. Now, I'm guessing you know more or less what to do for the infinite link (if you don't, just let me know), so for now I'll just describe how to get through the difficult bits where things can Go Wrong:

1) The hardest part is almost certainly the bit where you have to paraloop the group of 7 chips, then get to the group of stars floating high up to the right *without* losing the link. The way I do this is by looping the chips more or less like this:

[Link]

Basically, I'm collecting only one or two chips to start off with, them doing an anticlockwise loop and hitting at least one more chip to keep the link going, then orienting myself and dashing off towards the group of stars just as I close the paraloop. This means that I'll be heading away very fast in a fairly straight line, so it'll take the paralooped chips a little while to catch up with me; and by the time they do, I should be halfway to the group of stars, so I consequently shouldn't lose the link before I reach them.

EDIT: So essentially, do what tabitha does in the video that's now on the site. :)

2) The next place where things can go wrong is those big bouncy vines that NiGHTS launches himself between near the end of the course. To make things considerably easier, keep tapping the dash button as you go between the vines, as this'll cause NiGHTS to launch himself off of them instantly instead of waiting a second first.

3) The final place where things can really go wrong is linking the 3 chips before the Ideya palace to the 3 stars beyond it. In this case you simply have to line yourself up and dash in a straight line from one to the other: if you don't hit the first star dead on, you'll probably lose the link. Takes a bit of practice.

This course is pretty hard to get the hang of really, and it's by far the hardest of the "normal" infinite links, but if you persevere you should get a feel for it in time. I can give you a couple more tips, too:

- A note I made says that it's a good idea to kill both of the pink enemies on your first lap, as they can get in your way later on when they move around. One's near the 7 blue chips, the other's somewhere to the right.

- Once you get the hang of the course, you'll normally finish your final lap with a slightly random amount of time left over (six or more seconds, I think) which isn't enough to do another lap with, but also shouldn't be wasted. Instead of going straight into the Ideya palace, pass over it and open the link ball one more time with these spare seconds, then backtrack to the palace and finish.

Course 2 (my best: 60,630 with five laps)

Unlike Course 1, where your score will vary quite a bit depending on how long you can keep the link going for, Course 2 is pretty normal and consistent.

Strategy: from the start of the course, fly straight to the right through the chain of rings, collect the 3 blue chips in the air beyond, go through the two yellow rings and down into the speed-booster below. This'll propel you towards 5 blue chips and a slightly fiddly bit of level that is far easier to draw than describe:

[Link]

The yellow blobs are stars and the blue blobs are chips, but the other stuff in that illustration probably needs some explanation. The red line is the route I'd recommend for lap one, and where I've marked "hidden chips" there's a spot with 4 stars where, if you perform a paraloop, 7 chips will appear. You can then proceed into the speed-booster, do a funky loop to collect the line of 5 chips and head off to the right, where you'll find more items and (beyond them) the Ideya prison. If you manage to link all the stuff shown, you'll end up with a respectable 20+ link.

Important thing #1: you'll need to collect every single chip in the level before the prison in order to have 20, so be sure not to leave any behind.

After you destroy the prison, fly straight up to collect the link ball floating above it, then head right and open it by going through the rings. Don't hit the speed-booster at the end of the rings, though: instead, dash under it to the right and collect the two chips that are floating above a stone block, then dash onwards. This'll allow you to keep the link going all the way to the bouncy vines to the right, so by the end of the course you should have a 23 link.

Your other laps should be basically the same as your first, only I'd recommend not detouring for the 7 hidden chips because it takes up too much time: instead, try using the alternate route in that image I posted, the route marked in purple. That'll allow you to link a lot of stuff in the middle of the course without using up too much time, letting you squeeze in a full five laps (which seems to be optimal).

If you find yourself with quite a lot of time left on your final lap though, by all means detour for the hidden chips again (i.e. do the lap like lap 1, taking a bit more time to collect a bit more stuff).

Also, don't forget to grab the link ball on every lap, as it helps your score quite a lot.

Important thing #2: instead of heading straight into the Ideya palace when you finish the course, do a paraloop around the 3 chips just before it, then dash into the palace to end the course before they reach you. This'll mean that you only "collect" these chips when you're officially on Course 3, so it basically lets you start Course 3 with extra chips, which really helps.

Course 3 (my best: 103,980 with four laps)

Your Course 3 score will probably fluctuate quite a bit, as it's mainly determined by how well you do with the stunt ribbon in the cave, and as you've probably noticed it's bloody hard to do stunt ribbons consistently!

Strategy: as soon as you start the course, head left, collect the 3 blue chips near the palace, then dash further to the left and break the chip cage for another 8. Then dash back to the right and get started on the course properly: fly through the first two groups of items (yellow rings, orange rings, chips, stars and stuff), and when you hit the first speed-booster, angle yourself up slightly to clip one of the four stars that are floating slightly above your tradjectory. If you continue to the right quickly, you'll make it to the last group of 4 chips, stars and rings without losing the link, netting you a 20+ link overall. Then head right to destroy the Ideya prison.

Problematically, this method will only get you 19 chips in this course before you reach the prison, which is why you need to "carry over" at least one chip from Course 2 as mentioned above. Otherwise, you'll have to fuss around trying to snag a chip in the background / foreground with a paraloop in order to have enough.

After breaking the Ideya prison, head right and fly around the big temple thing, collecting and opening the link ball (by flying through all the rings) and hitting the switches so that you'll be able to enter the cave.

The cave is where you'll acquire most of your points for this course: your aim is to grab the link ball, pass through the stunt ribbon, then open the ball while performing a whole lot of stunts. I'd recommend that you crash through a few stars then do a reasonably big paraloop to get enough stars to open the ball, preferably doing some L / R stunts at the same time, then just mess around with stunts until the ribbon wears off. Of course, it's much easier said than done, but if you can consistently get 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 stunts in whilst opening the link ball, you're doing very well. As soon as you've finished doing your stunts, head out of the cave and proceed with the next lap.

To get a really good score for this course you absolutely have to squeeze in four laps, with four trips through the Cave of Much Bonus, which means you can't waste much time on the rest of the course. Fortunately, there isn't much else to do in the rest of the course apart from "head to the right while collecting stuff" as described above, so just rinse and repeat...

Course 4 (my best: 49,030 with four laps)

Like Course 2, Course 4 is pretty normal and should give you a fairly stable score.

Strategy: from the start, head right and up, collecting the 3 chips above the spike ring and entering the speed-booster. Continue right, through some yellow rings and down to another speed-booster, at which point you'll be in a section of level that you've already seen in Course 2, the part shown in that image I posted. On your first lap, treat it exactly like your first lap on Course 2: collect the 5 chips before the sign, then detour to get the 7 hidden chips etc.

After that you'll get to the slightly dull top-down view section, which I usually rush through pretty quickly. From the entrance, head directly up-right, through the gap between the marble blocks, and continue up-right to the Ideya prison, which you should have enough chips to break. Then head "south" from the prison, going through all the orange rings before hitting the speed-booster that takes you out. You should be able to carry the link on through all the rings after the booster too, getting a 20+ link overall. You'll then hit another booster, at which point you should angle upwards to hit yet another booster, then collect some final rings and chips and you've finished the lap.

Overall you'll want to squeeze in four laps, so you won't usually have enough time to detour for the 7 hidden chips again after lap one: in subsequent laps you should probably use the "quicker route" through that middle section, the one I described for Course 2. If you find yourself with excess time on your last lap though, by all means go out of your way and pick them up.

I'd recommend that you do go though all of the orange rings in the top-down section in every lap, as they're more or less on your way and they get quite a good link going.

Disclaimer!

Any or all of this may not be the best way of doing things, but I'm fairly certain these are the strats I used to get over 600,000 on Mystic Forest, and that I at least haven't forgotten anything important. This certainly isn't the be-all and end-all of Mystic Forest methods though, merely "what I thought was a good idea last time I played the level".

Anyhow, hope that helps! Just let me know if any of that's unclear, as NiGHTS levels are a bit awkward to put into words...

EDIT (01/02/2007): broken link(s) fixed.

Wow, that's incredible. o_O Thanks for all the help. ^_^ Hopefully, I'll get 600k on Mystic Forest soon as well...and I'll probably type up a similar Frozen Bell thing once I conjure the willpower. Honestly, I'm amazed that it was Mystic Forest and not Frozen Bell that was the first known 600k score...

Well Black rabite seems to have taken MF abit further. Some Qs for the shady bunny -

M1 - whats your strat for that difficult group of 5 chips? Same as Lance Ways? And whats you preM1 strat? Also was your SR done with the 385 link record, or on a different run? My best link isn't even over 300, and was only 2k less than your SR (and thats only a link balls worth).

M3 - are you collecting the extra chips in M2 to start off M3? And which wall you using for the stunts? I always found MF difficult in the stunt department for some reason...

M4 - My old strat was different from Lances in the sense that I did more laps, rushing through the top-down section - going through the gap in the middle, and not bothering with the car section at all. Whats you route?

Ok, interogation finished... :) Well done on the SRs!

gsk

M1 - The paraloop of the 7 chips is the most problematic part of this Mare, especially when it comes to maintaining the infinite. I employ a strategy very similar to Lance's, as it definitely gets the job done. After flying though those beginning rings and opening  the stunt ball, I try to position NiGHTS so that  I get the right-most chips of the formation coming at an upward angle. There is a lot of time to keep the link after dashing through those rings, so there's no pressure. After grabbing  one to three of those chips, I just do an anti-clockwise paraloop, I've found that one should only dash at the end of the loop in order to propel towards the batch of stars. Getting anxious and dashing mid-loop to "ensure" the paraloop only makes you loop to early and gain momentum in a direction other than that of the stars which you need to make haste to. Sometimes, using this strategy, I mess up my positioning and only end up with one chip following me. More often than not, I still keep the link.
My pre-M1 stat is some lazy, uninspired, rip-off of Lance's good advice, I think. I go North-North East of the palace in the beginning, getting 3 chips on a log. Then, I head to the east a bit and get 3 more chips on another log. Next, I head to those two stepping stones and double jump up to the group of 7 chips. The double jump gets the job done just right, and triple jumping only seems to mess up my aim. This sets me up with 13 chips, the exact amount needed to open the Ideya on the first lap. After getting all 13, I triple jump up the steep hill behind me, then proceed to attempt "speed jumping" to get to NiGHTS as fast as possible. My best bonus time using this method is 9200.
Some of my best runs on Mystic Forest's Mare 1 involve me losing the link several times, every couple of laps! I've gotten in the 108k - 110k with those as well. I've found what's most important is making the best of my link while I have it. I noticed myself rushing through the batch of stars after the tricky paraloop because all I cared about was keeping the link. However, I was losing 600 -> 1k points per lap because I wasn't bothering to aim for the entire set of stars. The fact of the matter is, this is  a silly habit since it takes no extra time whatsoever to pick up those supplementary points.
I believe the 385 Link was acheived in my record score, to answer your question, GSK. Think about it: if you only lose the link once, it takes ten more items to get the score bonus to 100 x 2. If you hadn't lost that link, those ten items are worth 2k. Instead, you only get about  1100 points for  that set of ten items. So, losing the link twice at any time, then acheiving one of almost 300 will put you in the neighborhood of 2k down from where you could've been, which matches up our scores almost perfectly.

M3 - Dragging the extra chips from M2 to M3 is a necessity. Sometimes, if I drag the chips especially late, the game won't respawn them. This screws me, as I have to fiddle with chips in the foreground near the sign later, using up valuable time. I've found this happens most often if I go past the Ideya palace in M2 to pick up some final points, then double back to paraloop the chips and finish the course. So, beware.
I am hardly one to talk to for Stunt Ring strategy,  but here is how I roll:  After grabbing the Link Ball, I dash south east, doing a  maneuverable stunt. This is good because it allows me to do my large - giant paraloop to try and open the ball while getting an extra trick in. Then, after the paraloop, I fly south west with another trick - doesn't really matter what kind. As soon as this trick crashes into the south floor, I swing around anti-clockwise to do a Middle Loop, doing a trick as I complete the loop. This trick's momentum carries me back into the floor, allowing my pathetic attempts at wall glitch abuse. I milk the floor as much as I can, optimally travelling towards the right of the screen. Near the end of the Stunt Mode's life, I'm at the east wall in the cave... this is where it's easier to do tricks on the right side of the analog stick (whereas the floor is more compatible with the bottom quadrants of tricks), so I milk these for all they're worth. I've gotten a Dreamy once or twice, 9-10 stunts about 25% of the time, and 7-8's for all of the rest. You get 4 attempts at the stunt ring. I started soft-resetting NiGHTS any time my end Mare 3 score was below 100k (after I was comfortable withouth the extra Mare 4 practice). The only way the Japanese got as high of a score as they did in the Dream total (over 700k) was by multiple Dreamies. I'm sure of it.

M4 - It sounds like a we share a similar strategy for this Mare. However, my laps are all just about the same as my first one, except without the trip to the ideya palace or the nabbing of the 5 chips under the sign. There are two post-20 links in my laps: the first one begins with the hidden seven chips above the sign. After paralooping through / around the stars and again to grab the 7 revealed chips, I go around the boost ball to grab the stars to continue the link. Then, I lower my altitude to obtain the 5 chips in a line. From here, I dash and go through the double ring plus a couple of more stars. This is usually 20 - 23 link.
As for the top-view, I rush through it as well,  going through the gap with the 4 chips. What's cool about these is that, if you're quick enough, you can link them with the rings thereafter! It's an extremely tight link, so you need to know exactly where the edge of the first ring is. I don't get this one too often, but it's and extra 200 to 600 points per lap! Keep flying through the rings, past the boost ball, into the stars, and through some more rings. Yay, 21 - 24 link. Those are the only highlights of this Mare. Oh, and try your best to nail that enemy at the end of the lap.

I hope this helps answer some questions. I need as much help as anybody else does when it comes to scoring in the forest's Mare 3. Please, please, let me know if I can clear any of this gibberish up for you. Enjoy!

I dont think that the MF1 is a rip off mate, its not really a mare with a lot of variables in it. Its pretty straightforward. Im assusming you did the normal route on MF2?

The slight variations on 3 and 4 seem to have made a big difference though. I will give it a try when I finally get around to cranking my Saturn up again.

I never really gave much thought to Mare 2 until recently. Take a look at the new topic concerning it to find (what has been for me) the optimal strategy.
